The following information may help you know the seagrass fiber better -

Climate - The seagrass can grow well in coastal regions of China and India. It is a grass grown rather like rice in wet paddy fields.

Cultivation - The fields need flooding with seawater during the crop cycle. After harvesting the long strands of seagrass are dried and spun into yarns. The yarns are woven into a variety of designs. Seagrass is only available in its natural green color. The green becomes a lighter and prettier shade with time.

Processing -The material undergoes very little processing. The yarn may retain some moisture when woven, with a natural hay-like scent. This goes away with time.

Seagrass Rug Maintenance -

  • The impermeable fiber with its smooth texture is not a good option for stairs.
  • It needs great care in humid areas.
  • The area should be well ventilated.
  • Under very moist conditions, seagrass can be susceptible to mold and mildew.
  • Seagrass responds to changes in humidity by expanding and contracting.
  • Natural fibers are static-free and do not attract dust. But, you should vacuum your rug daily.
